How Much Concrete Do I Need?

When people ask "how much cement should I use," they are usually looking for the total volume of Ready Mix Concrete. Ordering the correct amount is vital to avoid cold joints (running out mid-pour) or overpaying for waste.

The Formula for Success

To calculate your required volume in cubic meters (m³) use the following formula:

V = L x W x D

L = Length (in meters)

W = Width (in meters)

D = Depth (in meters)

Example: For a standard driveway that is 5m long, 3m wide, and 100mm(0.1m) deep:

5 x 3 x 0.1 = 1.5m³

Pro-Tips for Ordering

  • The "10% Rule": Always add 10% extra to your total. Ground is rarely perfectly flat, and some concrete will always remain in the pump or the hopper. It is much cheaper to have a small amount left over than to pay for a second "top-up" delivery.
  • Check Your Access: Before we arrive in Cardiff or the Valleys, ensure the path is clear. Our trucks are heavy! If we can't get close to the pour site, make sure you have booked our concrete pumping service.
  • Ground Prep: Ensure your sub-base is compacted and your shuttering (timber frame) is strong enough to hold the weight of wet concrete.
